馃摎 Social Emotional Learning Manuals
Bibliotherapy is a creative arts approach that uses storytelling, literature, and written expression as therapeutic tools. Through guided reading and reflection, individuals are encouraged to connect with characters, themes, and emotions, helping to build insight, empathy, and emotional awareness. Bibliotherapy is often integrated with other evidence-based therapeutic interventions to support overall emotional and social development.
Dr. Elswick has dedicated her expertise to developing social-emotional learning (SEL) curricula grounded in bibliotherapy and centered around children鈥檚 books. These book-themed curricula include structured activities for teachers, practitioners, and parents, all designed to strengthen social skills, increase empathy, and support emotional growth. Classroom and therapy-based activities enhance emotional learning in school and clinical settings, while the parent-focused materials encourage shared reading, open conversations about feelings, and daily interactions that foster healthy emotional development.
Since 2012, Dr. Elswick has continued to expand her work in bibliotherapy and activity-based SEL curriculum development. With the support of graduate and undergraduate students, community partners, and colleagues, she has developed numerous programs to promote emotional well-being in children and youth. She also integrates this work into School Social Work licensure courses at the 福利片国产 of Memphis and the 福利片国产 of Tennessee, Knoxville, where students learn to apply bibliotherapy techniques and design effective SEL curricula. Many of the resources included in these materials were created collaboratively with students as part of their clinical training.
As part of this ongoing work, these resources have been developed to support caregivers and the broader community in fostering strong, healthy 鈥渟erve and return鈥 interactions at home鈥攅ncouraging meaningful parent-child connections that build emotional resilience and support lifelong well-being.
