Dr. Carlton and his team specialize in the advancement of thermal therapies, which utilize controlled thermal energy to treat disease. Their innovative work encompasses several areas: creating patient-specific thermal simulations for virtual treatment planning, designing advanced temperature controllers and novel thermal therapy devices, and fabricating tissue realistic phantoms for device verification and validation. As of 2025, Dr. Carlton has authored 25 journal articles, secured 2 patents, presented 7 conference papers, and is a regular reviewer for several refereed journals related to nanoparticle research, thermal therapy, and engineering. He has mentored or co-mentored over a dozen students ranging from high school to PhD level. He is also an active member of the Society for Thermal Medicine and The American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
