Information Access Services
Information Access Services is comprised of Cataloging, Collection Management, Interlibrary Loan and Libraries Information Systems. The purpose of Information Access Services is to provide and promote information resources that foster academic success and support the ¸£ÀûƬ¹ú²ú of Memphis community.
Purpose
The Cataloging Department creates, maintains, and enhances records and resource descriptions in the ¸£ÀûƬ¹ú²ú Libraries' bibliographic database in support of the diverse academic programs at the ¸£ÀûƬ¹ú²ú of Memphis. The department catalogs, classifies, and processes items in a variety of formats and languages, providing subject and other access points, to enable researchers to find, identify, select, obtain, and navigate materials in the library's collections through the ¸£ÀûƬ¹ú²ú Libraries' online catalog.
¸£ÀûƬ¹ú²ú Libraries also hosts the catalogs of Jackson State Community College, LeMoyne-Owen College, and the ¸£ÀûƬ¹ú²ú of Memphis Law School Library.
Purpose
Collection Management orders and receives all library materials other than items designated as government publications. The Department also screens, evaluates, and processes all materials donated to the ¸£ÀûƬ¹ú²ú Libraries (except some materials donated for Special Collections or the branch libraries). In addition, Collection Management maintains subscriptions to print and electronic periodicals and databases.
It is the practice of the ¸£ÀûƬ¹ú²ú Libraries to extend to the university's teaching and research faculty opportunities to select for purchase, within annual budgetary limits, library materials that support their programs. The judgment of the scholarly worth of materials being considered for purchase is reserved for the teaching and research faculty. Judgment of the appropriateness of gift materials rests with the library faculty.
